Land O' Lakes is a census-designated place in Pasco County, Florida, located in the northern part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area about 20 miles north of downtown Tampa. Home to roughly 36,000 residents, it is one of the larger unincorporated communities in the Tampa Bay region and a central hub of growth in Pasco County. The community's name reflects its geography. Chosen at a community meeting in 1949—and inspired by the imagery of fertile lake-dotted country—"Land O' Lakes" describes a landscape threaded with numerous small lakes that support boating, fishing, and waterfront living. The area's earlier history included Dupree Gardens, one of Florida's original roadside tourist attractions, a reminder of the region's long-standing appeal to travelers and newcomers. Today Land O' Lakes functions primarily as a suburban residential community. Its housing stock ranges from established neighborhoods and lakefront homes to large master-planned developments such as Connerton and Bexley, which have added resort-style amenities and thousands of new homes. Public schools are part of Pasco County Schools, one of the larger districts in the region, whose administrative offices are located in the community. Transportation access is a key asset. Interstate 75 and the Suncoast Parkway provide routes toward Tampa and beyond, while U.S. Highway 41—Land O' Lakes Boulevard—runs through the heart of the community, and nearby Wesley Chapel supplies major retail, dining, and entertainment. Recreation is anchored by the lakes themselves and by preserves such as Cypress Creek and Conner, which offer trails through wetlands and woods.
