Wimauma is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in southeastern Hillsborough County, Florida, within the SouthShore region. It sits along U.S. Highway 301, about 25 to 30 miles south of downtown Tampa and roughly 20 miles south of Brandon, with a population of roughly 9,500 at the 2020 census. The community is governed by Hillsborough County rather than a municipal government. Wimauma's roots are agricultural. Platted around Lake Wimauma and the railroad line that opened the area to settlement, the community grew through truck farming, cattle raising, sawmills, turpentine, and produce packing. Incorporated in 1925 as one of Hillsborough County's early municipalities, Wimauma later returned to unincorporated status but retained its identity as a farming community whose seasonal population swells during harvest periods. Diversity is central to Wimauma's character. A substantial Hispanic and farmworker population has shaped the community's culture, reflected in its bodegas, bakeries, and family-run businesses, and community organizations have long served farmworker families across the region. In recent years, Wimauma has become a focal point of growth in southern Hillsborough County, with new residential subdivisions spreading across former farmland as the SouthShore region accommodates commuters and families. Hillsborough County Schools is adding a high school in the community to serve the expanding population, and RCMA operates charter schools in the area with deep roots in serving farmworker families. Interstate 75 and U.S. 301 connect Wimauma to Tampa, making it a practical base for commuters, while Sun City Center and Ruskin sit immediately adjacent. Wimauma's agricultural heritage and rural feel endure alongside this growth, giving the community a distinctive blend of old and new Florida.
