Apopka is a city in northwestern Orange County, Florida, located just northwest of Orlando. Its origins trace to mid-19th-century settlement attracted by the area's rich land, many lakes, and the abundant water of Rock Springs and Clay Springs (now Wekiwa), along with access to the Wekiva River and the St. Johns waterway. The city incorporated in 1922 and grew as an agricultural community, first through citrus and later through the greenhouse and nursery industry that earned Apopka the nickname "Indoor Foliage Capital of the World." That foliage heritage remains part of the city's identity, and nurseries and horticultural businesses still operate in the surrounding area, even as Apopka has evolved into a substantial suburban and residential center for the Orlando metro. The city combines a historic downtown core with a broad ring of established and newer neighborhoods, commercial corridors, and lakeside communities that reflect steady growth across northwest Orange County. Apopka's defining natural feature is its proximity to a remarkable cluster of springs and lakes. Lake Apopka, one of Florida's largest lakes, lies to the west, with the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive offering a popular route for birding and wildlife viewing across the lake's restored north shore. To the east and north, Wekiwa Springs State Park protects the headwaters of the Wekiva River, with its clear spring run, dense hammocks, and sandhill uplands, while Rock Springs offers additional swimming and paddling. With a population of roughly 55,000, Apopka functions as both a self-contained community and a commuter city tied to Orlando's employment and attractions, which lie about 20 miles to the south. Orange County Public Schools serves the city through Apopka and Wekiva high schools and their feeder schools, and the area's location on the region's growing western corridor continues to draw families and businesses seeking a greener, more open setting within the metro.
