Coral Springs is a city in Broward County, Florida, located about 20 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale and considered a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area. Its origins are unusually deliberate for a Florida suburb: the city was chartered on July 10, 1963, and master-planned by Coral Ridge Properties, led by Fort Lauderdale builders James S. Hunt and Joe Taravella. The 1966 master plan imposed strict aesthetic controls — prohibiting neon signs, billboards, and certain building colors — to create an orderly, tree-lined suburban ideal that still shapes the city's look today.
