Ocoee is a city in Orange County, Florida, located west of downtown Orlando in the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Its population was 47,295 at the 2020 census. The city's history reaches back to the 1850s, when the settlement was known as Starke Lake, and its modern growth accelerated after State Road 50 was constructed south of downtown in 1959, providing a direct east-west connection to a growing Orlando. That highway link transformed Ocoee from a quiet lakeside town into a residential suburb, and the city has continued to grow as part of the West Orange corridor. Today Ocoee is largely residential, with established neighborhoods, newer subdivisions, and a population that includes many families and young professionals. Public schools are provided by Orange County Public Schools, one of the largest districts in the country, with Ocoee High School anchoring secondary education in the city.
