Oviedo is a city in Seminole County, Florida, in the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area, located in the county's eastern reaches about 20 miles northeast of downtown Orlando. With a population of roughly 40,000 across about 16 square miles, it has grown from a small agricultural settlement into a substantial suburban community while retaining a distinctive small-town identity. The city is best known for an unusual local institution: the free-roaming chickens that wander through its historic downtown. The chickens, which have been a presence for decades, are a beloved and widely recognized symbol of Oviedo's quirky, community-oriented character. Around the historic downtown are shops, cafes, and older buildings that recall the city's agricultural and railroad-era roots, when Oviedo was a center of celery farming and citrus. Oviedo's growth has been closely tied to the University of Central Florida, whose main campus lies about two miles south of the city limits, and to the broader Orlando economy. Much of the city's housing was built between the 1980s and the 2010s, in the form of master-planned communities and family-oriented subdivisions. Newer developments, such as Oviedo on the Park, have added a walkable, amenity-rich center with restaurants, an amphitheater, a lake with swan boats, and regular community events. For residents, Oviedo combines highly rated Seminole County schools, a safe and family-friendly environment, and convenient access to UCF, the Central Florida Research Park, and Orlando's employment centers. Its mix of established neighborhoods, new construction, parks, and a charming downtown makes it one of the more desirable residential communities on Orlando's north side.
